Representative Jeff:
It has come to my attention that you have questions about the impact of the NM film industry in the Native American community. I'm not native, but as a location manager I can attest to the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on location site fees, and great jobs for tribal folks. Many tribal members have said that filming provides incentive for tribes to preserve their lands intact as film locations. Since the NM film incentives have been in place, I have personally filmed on or hired workers from:
Navajo Reservation
Jemez Pueblo
Zia Pueblo
Taos Pueblo
Mescalero Apache Reservation
Santa Ana Pueblo
Sandia Pueblo
San Felipe
And I know of other television or films that have shot on:
Isleta Pueblo
Laguna Pueblo
Pojoaque Pueblo
Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo
Cochiti Pueblo
Acoma Pueblo
None of these significant fees are rebateable, so it costs the state nothing to film on tribal lands or hire Native Americans during film shoots!
respectfully,
Rebecca Stair
